# Madagascar

Harry's framing is in the title of the first video: everybody knows the name and
almost nobody comes. What he finds is a country with enormous natural
advantages — biodiversity, resources, tourism potential — and one of the worst
standards of living he has recorded anywhere.

## The history, as Harry gives it

- **The first people came from what is now Indonesia**, out of Borneo. Africans
  arrived afterwards, and the country is a mix of the two — which is why many
  Malagasy people look East Asian and others look African.
- **The French took it** in the scramble for Africa, bringing infrastructure, the
  language and much of the present culture, and were hated for how they treated
  the population.
- **Independence came in 1960**, very fast, and since then the country has been
  shaped by what Harry calls crazy corruption — leaving it among the most unequal
  and the poorest in Africa, and therefore in the world.

## Observations

- **Over 75% live below the poverty line**, on $1–2 a day. Harry restates it
  standing in front of people working twelve-hour days for that.
- **He rates it visibly poorer than the other developing countries he has
  filmed**, naming Papua New Guinea as the comparison, and says the contrast with
  the country's resources is what makes it sad.
- **Begging is on a scale he hasn't met elsewhere**, including in other African
  countries — and a child he meets wants food rather than money.
- **Giving anything to anyone produces a crowd immediately**, which is the same
  pattern he records in [Lagos](/places/lagos.md) and
  [Kabul](/places/kabul.md).
- **Language is the real barrier**: Malagasy and French, and almost no English.
  Harry travels without a guide anyway.
- **80% of the animals are endemic** — found nowhere else on earth, lemurs and
  geckos among them.
- **Names are long and unlike anywhere else** he has been, which he flags as his
  own pronunciation problem rather than theirs.
- **Chinese construction again**: the national football stadium was built by
  China, and Harry says it isn't FIFA-recognised because it isn't safe.
- **Crime is opportunistic and poverty-driven** rather than organised, in his
  reading, with no headline terrorism or extremism. He walked back through
  [Antananarivo](/places/antananarivo.md) at night without trouble.
- **Zebu** is the local beef and the distinctive thing to eat.
- **French colonial food and architecture persist** — cathedrals, shuttered
  buildings, old Citroëns, and boeuf bourguignon on restaurant menus.

- **The corruption argument, stated fully.** Madagascar has abundant gold and
  copper. Independence in 1960 came too fast for the country to be ready, and
  since then the resource wealth has gone to a small number of people while the
  average person sees none of it.
- **Rice is the staple at scale** — 136 kg per person per year.
- **Religion** runs roughly 41% Christian, about 7% Muslim, and the rest
  traditional belief, which varies by tribe and includes veneration of the baobab
  for its longevity.
- **Burial is the organising social fact.** Boys are circumcised at two or three
  years old, and an uncircumcised man cannot be buried in the family grave. The
  proverb Harry is given: we live together and we are buried together.
- **Graduates have nowhere to go.** Harry's guide names the problem as low
  salaries, taxes that make small business unviable, and no jobs after
  university — which is why the streets are full of people with nothing to do.
- **Internal travel is the practical barrier to tourism**: flights expensive and
  unreliable, roads bad, journeys long, and no state investment in fixing them.
- **The films are barely known outside the cities**, because outside them there
  is often no electricity. The largest animal in the country is the zebu — no
  lions, hippos or giraffes.
- **The visible improvements are cosmetic.** A new metro line cleared one side of
  a settlement, and people were moved off the roads for President Macron's visit.
- **And Harry's overall verdict, which the titles don't prepare you for**: one of
  his favourite countries in Africa, with nothing bad to say about it. The anger
  in both videos is aimed at the corruption, not the country.
