# Dilip

A taxi driver in [Pokhara](/places/pokhara.md), and the reason one of the Nepal
videos works at all. Harry engages him for a full day with no meter and no
agreed fare — his own explanation is that he is paying for the entertainment —
and Dilip drives, waits at the foot of every hill Harry climbs, and decides
most of the itinerary himself, including the cave that turns out to be the best
thing Harry does in the city.

He is 43, has driven for around twenty years, and rents a house for 8,000
rupees a month; the family shop-house they end the day at is 13,000, and they
come originally from a rural district about 35 kilometres out. He has a wife, a
small baby, and a school-age daughter who changes gear for him while he drives.
He tells Harry he has climbed Everest and Annapurna (from video – unverified),
and points out that eight of the world's ten highest mountains are in
[Nepal](/countries/nepal.md).

The running joke of the video is that he will not accept anything. Harry buys
him a Nepali cap, sunglasses, a coffee and a woven basket over the course of
the day and has to argue him into each one — Harry's summary is that Nepalese
people never like receiving gifts. At the family house the chai is free because
it's their home. Harry closes by giving him 10,000 rupees.

Harry books him again for the Poon Hill hike.
