# Muhammad Jan

The guide for Harry's [Afghanistan](/countries/afghanistan.md) trip, credited by
name on camera at the end of the [Kabul](/places/kabul.md) video.

He is barely visible and holds the whole thing together. Harry speaks no Pashto
or Dari and very few of the people in either video speak English, so effectively
every exchange recorded on the Afghanistan pages is his translation — the
madrasa student, the nomad tribal head, the flour mill workers, the highway
barbers, the old photographer.

He is also the reason nothing goes wrong. It is his intervention that defuses a
Taliban soldier's confrontation over filming; he explains which questions can be
asked and which subjects can't be filmed; he finds the barbers; and he takes
over the distribution of the $1,000 giveaway specifically so that Harry handing
out money in a crowd doesn't turn into an argument.

The most useful thing he supplies is scale. He is the one who tells Harry that
33,000 afghani is more than the barbers could collect in a year, and who
translates the daily wages — $1 to $2 — that make the rest of the Afghanistan
material legible.

*Obs: no contact or booking details for him appear in either video or
description, so none are recorded here.*
