# Baltit Fort

Historic fort in the [Hunza Valley](/places/hunza-valley.md),
[Pakistan](/countries/pakistan.md), reached through very narrow village
streets. The guided tour presents it as the first royal house — over a
thousand years old and the oldest surviving standing structure in
Gilgit-Baltistan — with royal gardens, mica-flecked shining rock, a
watchtower, a dry-fruit storage, dungeons, a pre-Islamic wine cellar, and the
standing tomb of a king's brother who was entombed for revolting. A newer
19th-century wing with British-influenced architecture housed British
officers. The balcony looks out over villages, the valley, and the turquoise
river roughly a thousand feet below.

*Obs: the video description names Baltit Fort, but the garbled auto transcript
suggests the tour may have been of Altit Fort — the guide points out "Baltit
Fort over there" from the balcony, and the "first royal house / oldest
structure" history matches Altit. **The next day's video has the mirror-image
problem**: its description names [Altit Fort](/places/altit-fort.md) while its
transcript says Baltit and places the visit at Karimabad, where Baltit stands.
The bundle follows the description in both cases, and the two names may
therefore be swapped. What is not in doubt is that these were two different
tours of two different buildings — nothing in one appears in the other — so they
are recorded as separate pages. Discrepancy logged.*

## What Harry did

Harry and [Mac](/people/mac.md) took the guided tour in winter. Not "a big
history man", Harry still found it very interesting and recommends it — the
guide was excellent and the views alone justify the visit. The guide told
them the British won acceptance here partly by writing to the ruler in
Persian, which Harry takes as proof that
[learning the local language](/tips/learn-the-local-language.md) matters.

## Practical facts

- Entry: 1,200 (from video – unverified), roughly six or seven dollars.
- The mud-built structure reportedly withstands earthquakes up to about
  magnitude 8 (from video – unverified) and has survived several.
- Guided tours are available and worthwhile; there's a comment book at
  reception.

## Harry's tips

- Take the guided tour even if you're not into history — the stories and
  the balcony views make it.
- Combine it with a walk through the old village below, which is older than
  the fort's newer sections.
