# Mirissa

A beach town on the south coast of [Sri Lanka](/countries/sri-lanka.md), **five
to ten minutes' drive** from [Weligama](/places/weligama.md), which Harry goes
to for an evening rather than staying in.

## What it's like

- **More touristed than Weligama**, which is saying something — he remarks that he
has hardly seen a local since arriving.
- **White sand**, which he rates above the beach he is staying on.
- **Restaurants along the front** with hanging lights, palm trees and tables on
the sand, and **fresh fish displayed at the entrance**: tiger prawns,
  butterfish, red mullet.
- **The sunset is the reason to time it for the evening**, and he calls it one of
the best he has seen anywhere.

## Prices

- **About $16 a head** for a beach dinner with a drink. Harry's own framing:
that is a lot for Sri Lanka, it is exactly what a beachfront restaurant in a
tourist town costs, and **you should not come to this stretch expecting local
  prices.**
- **A prawn curry with rice, dal, vegetable sides and poppadom-like crackers** is
what he orders, and he finds it barely spicy.

## Harry's tips

- **Come for the setting, not the food**, which is what he says on camera — the
meal was good and the sunset was the point.
- **Bring cash.**
- **Order Sri Lankan and order seafood.** His reasoning on a beach is that it will
  at least be fresh.
