# Mount Hagen

Market town in the highlands of
[Papua New Guinea](/countries/papua-new-guinea.md), named after the German
Mr Hagen from the territory's German New Guinea days. Villagers from the
surrounding highlands come to its market to trade during the day and leave
before dark. Remote and expensive to reach — there's no direct road to Port
Moresby; the budget route is a day-long minivan to Lae on the coast, then a
ferry.

## What Harry did

Harry roamed the market greeting vendors and practising Tok Pisin: eggs at
1 kina, live chickens around 35–40 kina (roughly £7/$10), livestock
medicine, women weaving string bags while they sold. He hunted down betel
nut — banned inside the market itself because of the spitting, sold just
outside — and bought 100 nuts at 1 kina each as gifts for the tribes he was
about to visit, instantly drawing a crowd of thirty. A roadside open-air
church service was in full swing as he left.

## Practical facts

- The market is fine by day, but locals clear out at night because it gets
  dangerous.
- Betel nut: 1 kina per nut; not sold inside the market (chewing-spit ban).
- Eggs 1 kina; live chickens around 35–40 kina.
- Marijuana is openly offered but illegal — sellers risk arrest.
- Reaching Port Moresby cheaply means a full-day bus to Lae plus a ferry;
flying is the fast, expensive option.

## Harry's tips

- Stock up on betel nut here before visiting tribes — it's the gift that
  opens every door (see
  [bring gifts for hosts](/tips/bring-gifts-for-hosts.md)).
- Learn a few Tok Pisin phrases; even broken attempts delight people.
- Visit the market in daytime only.
