# Quiapo

The dense downtown market district of [Manila](/places/manila.md) in the
[Philippines](/countries/philippines.md), running into Divisoria. Harry
describes it as the craziest market he has been to and comes back every year
for the energy — his stated reason for preferring it to BGC and Makati is that
the people are far friendlier and more interesting. It is chaotic enough that
he can't always tell what is a road and what is a stall, and open enough that
he was handed a stall's microphone to advertise their t-shirts to the street.

## What Harry did

Had a broken iPhone back panel replaced while he waited, ate fresh lumpia made
from a grandfather's recipe, worked through the food market, and handed 5,000
pesos to each person who served him.

## Practical facts

- Phone repair is done on the spot and to a high standard, but there is no
  insurance — if they break it, that's your problem. Labour was quoted at 1,500
  and dropped to 1,300 when Harry asked for the local price; an original
  replacement part was 2,500. A busy repairer handles about five phones a day.
- Fresh lumpia: two pieces for 50. The carts are deliberately portable because
  street selling is illegal here and vendors need to be able to move fast.
- Food market prices: palabok 35; stallholders work from around 5am to 8pm.
- Counterfeit perfume and sunglasses are sold openly.
- Santo Niño figures for homes and businesses run to about 2,500.
- Everyone speaks English, which Harry singles out as a relief compared with
  much of his travel.
- The area is strongly Christian — church ceremonies draw crowds, and candles
  are sold outside for wishes. Harry notes the candle selling has a whiff of a
  scam about it.

## Harry's tips

- Come here rather than the business districts. It's the friendlier half of the
  city and the more interesting one.
- Ask for the local price — see

  phrase alone moved the repair quote.
- Eat from the carts. The lumpia seller makes about 150 pieces a day from a
  family recipe.
