# Sinharaja Forest

A forest reserve and biodiversity hotspot in [Sri Lanka](/countries/sri-lanka.md),
designated a **Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site by UNESCO** — per the
video description — with tea country and smallholdings in the hills around it.
Harry spends the last substantial stop of his trip here.

## Getting there

- **A couple of hours from anywhere**, the last part off-road. A 4x4 is needed for
  the track.
- **There is no phone signal**, at the lodges or on the ridge.

## Staying

Accommodation here is lodge-style rather than hotel-style: individual huts, full
board with staff cooking to order, an infinity pool over the mountains, and a
yoga deck. *(Harry's group was invited to stay and the lodge is linked in the
video description, so it isn't named here.)*

**What is worth knowing generally**: this is a place for a couple of quiet days
rather than a base for anything, tea plantations run right up to the buildings,
and the pickers work them within sight — leaves collected into a sack slung from
a strap across the forehead.

## The hike

- **Driven about 20 minutes uphill, then about 4 km on foot** along a ridge, past
  phone masts and a naval base.
- **Almost nobody walks it.** The guide's account is that some days bring a few
  visitors and most days none.
- **A bee or wasp nest sits across the path** and is described as genuinely
  dangerous — you pass it quietly.
- **Hairy caterpillars here are poisonous.** Don't touch them.
- **Monkeys are audible below the lookout**, which has a sheer drop and is often
  inside cloud.
- **A natural pool** nearby: clear, cold and swimmable, and the one place Harry
  meets other tourists.

## The waterfall

There is a waterfall about 20 minutes by 4x4 from the lodges and then a short walk
— **through a private garden and out across tea fields**. It has **no name**;
people are simply told where it is.

- **Tall and thin**, 10–20 m, into a pool locals put at **20 m deep**.
- **Fresh water, clear enough to open your eyes underwater**, cool rather than
  cold.
- **The pool is full of small fish that bite you**, exactly like a fish spa —
  painless, relentless, and hard to sit still through.
- **No other visitors**, which is the guide's whole pitch for it.

## Leeches, and what grows on the path

- **There are leeches.** One took hold of Harry's hand on the walk out and bled
  freely once removed. Check as you go.
- **Mosquito repellent is needed.**
- **Wild pepper and cinnamon grow along the tracks** and can be eaten straight off
  the plant. The cinnamon bark stings slightly on the tongue and is sweet.
- **Tea is replanted in visible cycles** — bare brown plots next to grown bushes.

## Cricket

Village matches happen on flat ground near the plantations and **you can ask to
join**. Harry does, having spent three weeks failing to find a game, and reports
the local bowling as fast and good.

## The tea factory

A working factory in the valley, from **1962**, which Harry is shown around
informally. Roughly **five stages**, including **oxidation**:

1. **Hand sorting** of the raw green leaf.
2. **Weighing**, then **drying** — the dried leaf dropped to the floor below.
3. **Rolling and blending** through a series of machines, old and new.
4. **Further drying**, down to a very fine flake.
5. **Packing by hand.**

**The workforce here is Tamil-speaking.** Sinhala gets you nowhere.

## Eating

- **Lunch off a banana leaf**, eaten by hand with a finger bowl: rice, chicken,
  salad, beetroot, dal and a poppadum-like cracker, served from clay pots.
- **Fresh local tea**, which Harry rates above English breakfast tea, and cinnamon
  sold in the villages.
- **Prawn curry, pilau rice, poppadum-type crisps and potato in a green sauce**
  is the standard lodge spread, with mango ice cream after it.

## The smallholdings

Farms along the track keep **goats — for milk rather than meat**, with the animals
under the house and the kids inside it — alongside cows, dogs and **wild jungle
fowl**. Visitors who stop are simply invited in.

## Harry's tips

- **Come for the disconnection.** No signal is the feature, not the drawback.
- **Take the walk even if the weather is closed in**; he preferred the cloud.
- **Ask to see a factory.** His was not an arranged tour — they walked in and the
  duty manager showed them round.
