# Tiébélé

Village in southern [Burkina Faso](/countries/burkina-faso.md) near the
Ghana border, a UNESCO World Heritage site described to Harry as the
oldest continuously inhabited village in West Africa and the country's
number-one sight. The royal compound is built as a defensive maze — tiny
doorways, blind entrances, circular and square houses — with the men
building and the women painting the celebrated black-white-and-earth
geometric murals. The community is animist, worshipping through the earth,
plants, animals, and farming life; around 70,000 people live in the wider
Tiébélé area (from video – unverified).

## What Harry did

Drove three hours from Ouagadougou through repeated military checkpoints
with [Kieran](/people/kieran.md), a guide, and a driver — at the village
the guards asked exactly one question ("Are you French?") before waving
them in. He toured the painted compound, squeezed through the defensive
bedroom doorways (too small for Kieran), sat with a royal-family member
($10 to sit in the court seat), heard how school fees and climate-shrunken
millet harvests strain families, and bought souvenirs from notably
unpushy sellers.

## Practical facts

- Getting there: about three hours' drive south of Ouagadougou through
  many checkpoints — go with a guide and driver.
- Sitting in the royal court seat costs visitors $10.
- No electricity in the traditional compound; interiors stay surprisingly
  cool despite ~37°C heat.
- Justice is local: the chief and elders judge most matters, the king the
  serious ones.
- Souvenir sellers are relaxed and unpushy.

- Make Tiébélé the reason you leave the capital — it's the top thing to do
  in the country.
- Go early: it's a long, hot drive and the village is best before the sun
  peaks.
- Duck. The doorways are defensive by design.
