# Ushuaia

The southernmost city in the world, at the bottom of
[Argentina](/countries/argentina.md), and the place they call the end of the
world. It is **three hours by air from Buenos Aires**, and it is where Harry
boards the ship for [Antarctica](/countries/antarctica.md).

The port here is the southernmost in the world. Practically every Antarctic
expedition starts from it.

## What it's like

- **Very remote, and it feels it** — which Harry treats as the first instalment
  of the trip rather than a chore.
- **Not much English is spoken.** The people, he says, are very nice and very
  kind.
- **The high street is expensive.** He walks it for a while looking for gear.
- **There is a shop selling counterfeit outdoor brands**, which he finds by
  accident and points out that nobody told him about.

## Las Malvinas

Ushuaia has a memorial to the Argentine soldiers who fought the British in the
Falklands War — Las Malvinas here — and Harry, who is English, stands in front of
it and refuses to say anything at all. He states plainly that he is not going to
joke, that if he talks he is in trouble, and that he is keeping his mouth shut.

## Harry's tips

- **Budget for the town as well as the boat.** The main street is expensive and
  you'll be buying gear.
- **Don't have opinions about the Falklands out loud.** His own approach,
  demonstrated at length.
