# Book nothing in advance

Harry's default is to arrive somewhere with nothing reserved and sort it out on
the ground. He states it as a policy rather than an accident: no hotel, no
driver, no guide, nothing more than a day ahead.

**The reason is not money — he says outright that it sometimes costs more.** It
is that a fixed booking decides your next few days before you have met anyone,
and most of what ends up in his videos comes from people he met that morning. He
describes the pace as fast, and the flexibility as what suits it.

## How Harry applies it

**Three weeks of it, in [Pakistan](/countries/pakistan.md).** Arriving in
[Lahore](/places/lahore.md) off the overnight train with nowhere to stay, he
explains the rule as it applies to the whole trip: he and [Mac](/people/mac.md)
have booked nothing more than a day out for three weeks, occasionally pay a
little extra for it, and take that trade every time — it lets them meet people
and go where those people are going. The Airbnb that opens the series was
booked, in his phrase, at the last minute like everything else.

**The hardest test of it, in [Bougainville](/places/bougainville.md).** He and
[Kieran](/people/kieran.md) fly into an autonomous region with no tourism
industry having booked nothing at all, which he states on camera as the method.
It works: they find a hotel by knocking at the door and it turns out to have air
conditioning. It also costs — with no guide arranged, the day at the Yamamoto
crash site is negotiated from a standing start with the landowners, and there is
no second option to walk to.

Which is the honest shape of the rule: **it works best where somebody will
always take your money, and worst where there is only one person who can help
you.**

## When it is the flight that isn't booked

The [Sri Lanka](/countries/sri-lanka.md) series starts with the rule applied a
step further back than accommodation. Talked into it overnight by friends already
there, Harry **books a flight out of Dubai about four hours before it departs**
and gets on it with no visa and no onward ticket, arranging a PCR test and the
entry forms inside the same four hours.

It works — the Sri Lankan border waves him through on a few pandemic forms — but
**the cost lands at check-in rather than at the border**, which is the part worth
keeping. The airline is the one that has to be satisfied you are allowed into the
country and leaving it again, and he describes that as genuinely hard and too
stressful to film. A country changed on four hours' notice is the most
productive version of this rule and also the one where it nearly fails before
you have left.

## The earliest instance, where he doesn't recommend it

Everything above is Harry defending the habit. The first video of the
[Jordan](/countries/jordan.md) series, from November 2021 and among the earliest
in the bundle, is where he undercuts it — and it is the only place he does.

Arriving in [Amman](/places/amman.md) to meet [Mac](/people/mac.md), he explains
that they have planned nothing beyond the obvious sights, gives the reason
(**both of them were simply too busy to plan**), and then says outright that he
probably wouldn't recommend travelling this way, but that sometimes that is how
it happens and you go with it.

**Two things follow from that.** The habit started partly as circumstance rather
than as method — the philosophy on the rest of this page is a later account of
something that began as not getting round to it. And his own confidence in it
grows over time: the Pakistan statement three years later has no hedge in it at
all.
