He is not dismissive about risk — he researches, uses local contacts, and takes advice — but he treats a bad reputation as a reason to look rather than a reason to stay away, and he says so directly on camera. His shorthand for it is that not all places are bad and not all people are bad, and you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. ## How Harry applies it Before travelling to [Marawi](/places/marawi.md) — a city held by pro-ISIS militants for five months in 2017 — he asked around and got a clean split: roughly half the people said it was fine, half said don't go, with a recent kidnapping elsewhere in the region cited as the reason. His response was that you can't believe everything you hear and have to go and find out for yourself. He made the overland trip, walked the ruined centre, stayed the night, and came away describing the city as peaceful and its people as the kindest he'd met anywhere in the [Philippines](/countries/philippines.md). He applies it to neighbourhoods as readily as to countries. Walking into [Tondo](/places/tondo.md), Manila's most notorious district, he notes that its reputation for danger dates from the 1970s and 80s — when migration and poverty drove crime rates up after independence — and declines to treat a fifty-year-old reputation as current. He deliberately got lost in its side streets, and by the end of a day crossing seven districts rated it the friendliest and most entertaining of them all. It applies to tourist reputations as much as dangerous ones. He went to [Boracay](/places/boracay.md) having been told repeatedly it was a tourist trap where you can't walk the beach without being hassled, framed the video as finding out whether it was heaven on earth or a sandy scam with a sunset view, and concluded the hassle was real but the trap wasn't — rating it one of the nicest places he has ever been. The furthest he has taken it is an institution rather than a city. He entered the provincial prison in [Capiz](/places/capiz.md) expecting dangerous men and a hostile regime, and left calling it the friendliest prison in the world — while being equally direct that the living conditions are among the hardest he has filmed. He is explicit that the preconception he arrived with was that prisoners are people who cannot change, and that talking to them is what dismantled it. He has also stated the limits of it. Walking into Lyari, the district he'd been told was the most dangerous in [Karachi](/places/karachi.md), he set out his own rule for how to talk about a poor place: don't state the obvious, have some compassion, ask what it would have been like to be born there — and equally, don't sugar-coat, and never call something amazing when it isn't. The tip is about going and looking, not about coming back with a flattering answer. He also knows when not to apply it, which is what stops the tip being a slogan. Walking [Los Angeles](/places/los-angeles.md) in one day, he finds Compton and Watts far quieter than their reputations — the gangs largely gone, the neighbourhoods mixed, residents describing them as safe — and then reaches Skid Row and says the opposite out loud: that he felt safer in Kabul than in downtown LA. Same video, same method, opposite answers, and he reports both. It also runs in reverse, and he applies it to himself. He titled a video calling [Hawaii](/places/hawaii.md) the most overrated place in the world, and then walked it back on camera: the place is not overrated, the price is, and his actual comparison is that the Philippines or Indonesia deliver the same scenery for a fraction of the money. A reputation being too good is the same failure as a reputation being too bad, and both are corrected the same way. The same premise names two of his other films outright, both built on going somewhere Western coverage had written off. ## The case that comes with its own conditions attached [Comuna 13](/places/comuna-13.md) in [Medellín](/places/medellin.md) is the purest statement of this page's thesis anywhere in the bundle — Harry says the district was one of the most dangerous places in the world ten to twenty years ago, is now a tourism hotspot, is a perfect example of somewhere you shouldn't stereotype, and **sums up Colombia**. **And the same video bounds every part of that**, which is why it belongs here rather than on the pile of agreeing demonstrations. Its own description says the district is safe *with a tour guide*. The guide steers him out of sections where, he explains, people don't want to be filmed. Police and army stop people and run their ID numbers on a handheld; an arrest happens in shot; a helicopter circles. The guide's own anecdote is a shooting by the escalators three years earlier, in front of six American visitors. None of that is the reputation being right. Harry says up front that he isn't there to judge and wants to give [Egypt](/countries/egypt.md) the benefit of the doubt, and comes out saying [Giza](/places/giza.md) was no worse than any heavily touristed site anywhere — with two caveats he keeps: he is experienced at this, and he was quoted high prices all day. The ending does the arguing for him. The page is better for the fact that Kieran turns up mid-video and gives a much harsher verdict on the same city, and Harry prints it. - [48 hours in Lesotho - the World's Strangest Country 🇱🇸](/videos/hQU0lNJ3B7k.md) — aimed at a whole continent rather than one country, and prompted by his own audience: the comments had accused him of only ever showing the bad parts of Africa, so he went to [Lesotho](/countries/lesotho.md) to answer them. His verdict — no complaints, nobody harsh to them, his favourite country in Africa — is the least dramatic on this page and one of the more useful, because nothing bad happened and there was no reputation to overturn beyond a general one. - [Madness in Mozambique's Maputo! 🇲🇿](/videos/3Imq-hamRZM.md) — a country he introduces as better known for headlines than holidays, entered on the promise of a neutral view and whatever it turns out to be. Standing at Shwedagon in [Yangon](/places/yangon.md), Harry points out that people are shooting at each other in [Myanmar](/countries/myanmar.md) while he films, and draws the distinction the page needs: a country being at war does not mean the whole country is dangerous. He made the same call in Ukraine.
