# The gift that isn't free

A seller hands you something and calls it a gift. Harry's rule is that this is
a negotiating position, not a gift, and that the moment to decline is **before it
is opened, poured, wrapped or put around your neck** — because after that you are
no longer deciding whether to buy, you are deciding what to pay.

The tell is the vocabulary. "No money." "It's free." "Money is not everything."
These arrive alongside more product, not instead of it.

The important half of the tip is what to do once it has happened, and Harry's
answer is not to walk away angry: **stay friendly, refuse the substitution, and
ask for your change until you get it.** Every version of this he has run has
ended with both parties shaking hands.

## How Harry applies it

**In [Cairo](/places/cairo.md)** it is worked on him in full, minutes after he
leaves his hotel. A perfume seller opens a second bottle while Harry is saying
no, declares it free, then prices the pair at 500, then 400. Harry pays 400,
is owed 150 in change, and is offered 100 plus the extra bottle. He refuses,
calmly and about six times, and gets the full 150. His verdict afterwards is
admiration — he says it is the best selling he has ever seen — which is the tone
this page is written in.

**In [Seiyun](/places/seiyun.md)**, at a Yemeni gun market, a seller hangs a
necklace on him as a present. Harry accepts it warmly and then tells the camera
exactly what he is thinking: in Egypt, this same gesture is followed by a price
of about $30.

That's the useful thing about having both. The Yemeni gift may well have been a
gift. Harry's point is not that generosity is fake — it's that the two are
indistinguishable at the moment they happen, and only one of them costs you
money to get wrong.

## When it isn't an object

The [Cartagena](/places/cartagena.md) version broadens the page, because there is
nothing to hand back. A man attaches himself to Harry near the city wall, takes
him for a drink, walks him to a market to buy sunglasses, and asks for money as
Harry is leaving — a tour that was never requested and cannot be declined
retrospectively, since it has already been delivered.

**So the "refuse it before it is opened" move has no equivalent here**, and what
Harry does instead is worth having: he pays, at his own figure rather than a
negotiated one — 10,000 pesos, two or three dollars — declines to argue about
whether it was owed, and simply doesn't turn up to the plan they had made for the
next day. He is careful to say the man was good company and that he got a drink
and a pair of sunglasses out of it.

The lesson the object version can't teach: **with a service, the price is set
after delivery, so the only leverage you have is what you choose to hand over and
whether you come back.**

The next day, on [Bocagrande](/places/bocagrande.md) beach, he gets the other
half of it right. A woman begins massaging his shoulders without being asked;
about ten seconds in he asks whether it is free, is told plainly that it isn't,
and declines. Nothing is paid. **So the object rule does survive the translation
after all — it just moves from "before it is opened" to "before it has run" —
and the difference between the two Colombian cases is roughly fifteen seconds of
attention.**
