# Wear the local dress

Harry buys local clothing in the market rather than packing for the country he
is going to, and wears it for the rest of the trip. The claim is not that it
disguises him — it plainly doesn't — but that **it changes how strangers open a
conversation with him**, from staring to speaking.

## How he applies it

- **Buy it locally, in the ordinary market**, not from a tourist shop. The
  fitting is half the value: in Jeddah the thobe purchase pulled in most of the
  street, which is exactly the interaction the tip is about.
- **Then actually wear it**, all day, not for one shot.
- **Check whether it is welcome first.** This is the part that decides whether
  the advice applies at all — see below.

## Where it works

- **[Jeddah](/places/jeddah.md), Saudi Arabia** — the strongest case. He buys a
  complete thobe on the first afternoon from a Bangladeshi trader in the souk
  and wears it for the whole video. Afterwards strangers stop him constantly,
  and every second person re-ties his headdress for him. His closing advice in

## Where it is not allowed

**The advice does not travel across the Gulf.** Harry raises the disrespect
objection himself and answers it with the local rule rather than his own
opinion: the thobe is permitted for foreigners in
[Saudi Arabia](/countries/saudi-arabia.md) and **banned for foreigners in the
UAE**, where he says he wouldn't wear one. The tip is conditional on the
country, and the condition is not a matter of taste.

## Where it changes nothing

- **[Swat](/places/swat.md), northern Pakistan** — the counter-example, and the
  reason this page is not just a recommendation. He buys a piece of local winter
  clothing in the bazaar for 500 rupees, about $2.80, puts it on in the street
  and asks the camera whether he fits in now. His own answer, thirty seconds

What separates the two is not the clothing. In Jeddah the point was that
approaching him became easy; in Swat, a foreigner with a camera in a town with
almost no tourists was always going to be the most interesting thing in the
market, dressed however he liked. **The dress lowers a social barrier where one
exists — it does not make you unremarkable**, and Harry's advice each time is
the same: take the staring in your stride.
