# I Survived 24 Hours in India with No Money 🇮🇳

Twenty-four hours with nothing in [Amritsar](/places/amritsar.md), run against
[Will](/people/will.md), who does it separately. It is the easiest of Harry's
no-money challenges and he says so halfway through — food and tea keep arriving
before he asks, and a free lift comes from the first bike he flags down.

That is partly Sikh hospitality being personal and partly it being
institutional. The Golden Temple feeds anyone, and the information desk hands
him a booklet listing more than twelve guest houses where a traveller can sleep
free. He picked, as he puts it, the right city for this.

The two moments that matter are both about honesty. When his attempt at a
water-selling business fails, he tries to give back the money strangers gave
him, and is told to pass it on instead. And at the end he admits on camera that
although they had found a free bed, they went back to their hotel — because he
doesn't want to be fake with viewers.

## Key moments

- [00:30] A lift from the first motorbike he flags. The rider turns out to be a
  policeman.
- [02:40] Harry offers to pay him and is refused.
- [03:12] Ten minutes working as a shoe salesman, at 250–400 rupees a pair.
- [05:07] The real problem, as always, is where to sleep.
- [05:37] Free chai from a seller who has already fed him once.
- [07:19] An attempt to exchange phone numbers defeated entirely by the network.
- [08:37] A free public water service on the street.
- [09:07] Someone appears with free food before he has asked anyone for any.
- [10:26] Beckoned up to a rooftop for tea by a stranger.
- [11:29] Free chai again, with the best view of the main street.
- [12:43] Tourism here is overwhelmingly domestic, and his host says foreign
  numbers have fallen since Covid.
- [13:15] Kulcha with butter, and being taught how to eat it properly after
  getting it wrong.
- [14:59] A gift he tries to refuse and can't.
- [15:25] A guide offers a trip to the Attari border with Pakistan at 1,000 a
  head.
- [16:02] He asks a stranger for 10 rupees to start a business.
- [16:37] Water costs 20, not 10, so he has to ask a second stranger.
- [18:17] The business: nobody wants a bottle of water at 50 rupees, and the
  rejections mount.
- [19:19] He offers a hotel a bottle of water in exchange for a room.
- [19:55] He gives up and tries to return the money. Both men refuse it and tell
him to give it to someone else.
- [20:29] A hot, very sweet lassi instead, also free.
- [21:38] He gives 100 back to the man who lent him 10.
- [22:45] A viewer who recognises him from the Pakistan videos.
- [23:55] The plan for the night: find out whether you really can sleep at the
  Golden Temple.
- [24:25] The temple after dark, which he says is a completely different
  experience.
- [24:59] Food handed to him, then half of it taken back, in a ritual nobody
present can explain to him in English. He records his confusion rather than
  guessing.
- [26:13] The sweet, which he thinks is called halwa, and which he describes as
  closer to a dessert.
- [27:32] People sleeping rough outside the temple, and what that does to the
premise of a 24-hour game. He says it plainly: some people live like this
  every day.
- [28:03] The information desk gives him a booklet listing more than twelve
  guest houses offering free stays.
- [29:11] The admission: they could have stayed free, filming wasn't allowed
inside, and they went back to their hotel. He tells viewers rather than
  editing round it.
