# Solo Journey to Vietnam's Border with China 🇻🇳

An hour and a half of motorbike road trip: out of Hanoi, up through the northern
mountains to [Mu Cang Chai](/places/mu-cang-chai.md), several days living with a
Hmong family, then 200 km more to [Lao Cai](/places/lao-cai.md) on the Chinese
border.

Two things run through it. The first is that **the navigation fails all day** —
Google Maps repeatedly routes a motorbike onto expressways where motorbikes are
banned, and he loses hours to it. The second is that **every single stop turns
into hospitality**: free drinks, refused payment, invitations to sit, and a
running national interest in whether he is married.

He ends at the border and doesn't cross — no visa, and a fence along the whole
length of it — and apologises on camera for the title.

  before the crop is finished.

  it doesn't have one — if you name it, you don't want to kill it.
- [61:20] **Day four: 200 km north to the Chinese border.** He has no visa and says
  so up front, with a plan A and a plan B.

- [64:40] **A swim in a river with local kids**, diving competitions included. The
  younger generation speak no more English than the older one, which surprises him;
  the teenagers are smoking.

  new television, a mosquito net, and no neighbours at all. Rice wine distilled from
  wood, which he says tastes of it.

  to be a mountain-top complex reached by elevator: **500 to get in, one activity
  free.**
- [75:25] **A 100-metre glass skywalk** over a sheer drop, in wind, with the

  terrifying — and says he isn't exaggerating, twice.

  to make the point about the comfort zone, and which requires more concentration
  than any exam he has sat.

  pool.

- [82:55] **The border.** The crossing is open, the Chinese side is visibly full of
  high-rises against a low-rise Vietnamese side, and he cannot cross: no visa, none
  on arrival.

  He reads that unfenced stretches exist much further east, and takes the loss.
