# Epic Sri Lanka Road Trip 🇱🇰 (Sigiriya)

A travel day: [Kandy](/places/kandy.md) to [Sigiriya](/places/sigiriya.md) by
taxi with [Mac](/people/mac.md), [Luke](/people/luke-damant.md) and
[Ali](/people/ali.md), four people and their luggage in one van. The rock itself
is the next video; this one is the journey and the house at the end of it.

*Obs: this page is based on auto-generated subtitles.*

## The drive

- **Two to two and a half hours**, quoted at around **5,000 rupees** — just under
$25, split four ways — with a little extra because the accommodation turned out
to be further out than they thought. Harry's verdict is that it is very cheap
  for the distance.
- **The van has screens in the back**, which they use to play each other's
videos, and Harry ends up in the rearmost seat.
- **A wild elephant standing in the road**, which stops the video dead. He hadn't
known there were elephants in the country at all.
- **The last stretch is a dirt road** with dogs alongside it, long enough that he
starts commenting on how long it is.

**The driver chews betel nut** through the journey and hands some round; Harry
tries a sour fruit offered from the front and can't name it or find anything in
it but sourness. His account of the betel nut is that it gives a mild buzz, and
his observation — his own, not the driver's — is that the driving got more
erratic and the horn got busier afterwards.

## The Pizza Hut stop

Not local food, and he says so: the others spotted it from the window. It earns
its place on the page for the numbers and the comparison.

- **Two medium pizzas and a water for about $11**, which he thinks is cheap for a
  Western chain.
- **Temperature checks at the door** — February 2022.
- **He orders what the counter recommends as the local choice**, a spicy chicken
thin crust, and it turns out to be a slow burn rather than a hot one.
- **His verdict**: Pizza Hut in Sri Lanka is a great deal better than Pizza Hut in
the UK, which he says is terrible. He also decides afterwards that he ordered
wrong, and that the thick crust the others had was the better call.

## The villa

At the end of the dirt road: **about $300 for two nights — $150 a night, split
between four** — a spread-out place in the trees with a pool that they get into
before checking in, four bedrooms allotted by lucky dip, and a caretaker who is
cleaning the pool when they arrive. Harry's note is the temperature: the tree
cover keeps it mild, and if he stops talking there is no sound at all.

*Obs: Mac's claim in the car that Sri Lanka is the world's biggest tea exporter
is recorded as said (from video – unverified).*
