# Surprising Luke Damant, World Nomac and Go With Ali in SRI LANKA 🇱🇰

The first day of the [Sri Lanka](/countries/sri-lanka.md) series, and it exists
because a group chat talked him into it. Harry was in Dubai, unhappy with what he
was filming and repeatedly stopped by security while filming, when
[Mac](/people/mac.md), [Luke](/people/luke-damant.md) and
[Ali](/people/ali.md) started pushing him to come out. **He booked the flight
roughly four hours before it departed** and told only Ali, so that he could
surprise the other two at their villa in [Kandy](/places/kandy.md).

## Getting in on no notice

The interesting half of the video is the friction, which he describes rather than
films because it was too stressful to film.

- **No visa and no onward travel** at check-in, plus a PCR test and pandemic
  forms to arrange inside the four hours. He says check-in was the hard part.
- **The border itself was smooth** — a few pandemic forms and through.
- **An airport taxi for about $35**, for a drive he puts at two to three hours,

## The surprise, and the villa

[Ali](/people/ali.md) meets him at the top of the road and they plan it there:
the others are by the pool, so the pretext is a dead monkey on the wall for them
to come and look at. It works, and Harry's own gloss afterwards is that they are
now one of those channels that saves a monkey from a river.

The villa gets a full tour — four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a pool and jacuzzi,
a pool table, and a bedroom reached through a concealed door — at **about $300 a
night split between the group**.

## Dinner in Kandy

They go out to a rooftop lounge that is one of only about two places to go out in
Kandy — the city being much more low-key than Colombo — with an English owner,
happy hour, Chinese and Western food on the menu, Premier League football on, and
Lion beer. Harry notes with some surprise that the room is almost entirely
Westerners.

**The villa's owner orders for the whole table**, and the ordering is the
useful part: *how Sri Lankans eat* is one main dish plus a lot of side dishes,
shared. Rice and noodles as the base, then beef, aubergine, calamari, seafood,
sweet-and-sour prawns. The prawns are his favourite; nothing is as spicy as he
was bracing for.

Mac takes the camera for a stretch and vlogs the taxi ride himself, on the
premise that Harry has hired him part-time.
