# I Ignored Western Media and Went to Russia 🇷🇺

Opening episode of Harry's Russia series. Getting in is the hard part:
a visa that required visiting the London consulate, then four hours forty
minutes at the airport being questioned by security and the FSB — absurd
questions, a half-hour phone search (with his Ukraine trip visible on it),
and honesty as his strategy, which he credits for the "Welcome to Russia"
at the end. In [Moscow](/places/moscow.md) he stays at the historic
Soviet-era hotel by the Kremlin, walks Red Square and St Basil's, marvels
at the chandeliered metro, gets steamed and birch-whipped in the hottest
banya of his life with his friend Leon, and tours the city with
[Valeriya](/people/valeriya.md), a Russian TikToker he met in [Bali](/places/bali.md) — a
mock marriage at a vending machine, a traditional diner, and straight
answers about sanctions, Soviet memories, and 101-roses dating culture. At
VDNKh he runs into creator friends he met in North Korea. His conclusion
echoes his usual thesis: the government is not the people, Moscow is
"extremely safe" for petty crime, and warmth was all he found — with an
18-hour Soviet train south teased for the next episode.
