# Secret tour guide in JERASH, JORDAN🇯🇴

Harry and [Mac](/people/mac.md) drive up from the
[Dead Sea](/places/dead-sea.md) to [Jerash](/places/jerash.md), the Roman city
half an hour outside [Amman](/places/amman.md).

**The title is the story, and it lands as a direct answer to the day before.** In
Amman they turned down a citadel guide at 30 dinars and regretted it inside five
minutes. Here they turn one down again for the same reason — saving money — and a
man on the site simply attaches himself to them, shows them the parts worth
seeing, refuses payment, offers to give them things, and gets called the best
tour guide they have ever had. Harry's own analysis is the sharp bit: **the value
wasn't a history lesson, it was knowing where to go.**

Everything else is hospitality and food. They ask their driver where to eat and
get the best meal of the trip; the guide won't take money; a stallholder tries to
give something away free. Harry says outright he wasn't expecting any of it.

## Key moments

- [00:07] Leaving the Dead Sea early, driven by the same taxi driver.
- [00:38] An hour and a half from the Dead Sea, about half an hour from Amman —
and he recommends it as a day trip from the capital.
- [01:09] They ask the driver where to eat; it is prayer time, so service may
  pause.
- [01:43] The spread: spicy rice, beans and rice, chicken, lamb kebab with
  sesame sauce, tomato sauce, pasta.
- [02:13] Hummus for only the second time in his life.
- [02:43] Fresh warm flatbread, and the verdict — eyes closed.
- [03:16] Mac's tip: mix whole chickpeas through the hummus.
- [03:16] The Jordanian white sauce again, still unnamed by anyone.
- [03:51] Jordanian sweets brought out, including a small fried pastry he
  compares to a doughnut.
- [04:21] The city split in two — modern on one side, Roman on the other; the
regional Roman capital and one of its biggest cities.
- [05:07] In free on the Jordan Pass, and he restates the case for it including
  the visa on arrival.
- [05:42] The hippodrome — and the admission that they skipped a guide to save
money and know nothing about the place beyond "it's Roman".
- [06:12] Struck by how many tourists there are, after two years of empty sites.
- [06:54] A man on the site starts showing them round.
- [07:26] He offers something for free and means it.
- [07:57] Harry on it: he wasn't expecting anyone to give anything away, and this
is what people here are like.
- [07:57] The theatre, and its acoustics — he tests them from the floor.
- [08:58] What made the man a good guide: not the history, but knowing the
  random spots worth finding.
- [09:29] Offered flowers and a photograph, again for no money.
- [10:02] Through the market on the way out, and a conversation with a very tall
stallholder who used to live in England.
