# $14 North Face Jacket in Nuwara Eliya 🇱🇰

A single purchase, filmed at length: Harry wants a jacket, walks the whole
central market in [Nuwara Eliya](/places/nuwara-eliya.md) four times comparing
them, and buys one for 2,800 rupees — about $14.

It is the most useful shopping video in the cluster, because a seller stops and
explains the trade to him.

*Obs: this page is based on auto-generated subtitles. Harry gives the stall a
direct on-camera plug with walking directions, and the seller offers his viewers
a discount, so under the bundle's rule on advertising the stall is not named.*

## Why the labels are cut out

The explanation comes from a seller, in his own words, and it reframes the whole
"real or fake" question the video is built around:

- **Sri Lanka manufactures for Western outdoor and fashion brands.**
- **A run is made to order** — his example is 10,000 pieces for a German
customer — and **QC rejects two or three thousand of them** for small defects.
- **Those pieces cannot legally be sold on the local market as branded goods**, so
**the labels are cut out** and they go to markets like this one.

So the honest answer to "is it real?" is neither yes nor no: **it is the same
factory, the same fabric, and a garment the brand refused.** Whether any
individual jacket on the rail is that, or is a straight copy, is what Harry
cannot tell.

*Obs: this is the seller's account, given on camera, and nothing in the video
corroborates it.*

## The prices

- **A jacket asked at 7,500 rupees — about $37.** The seller's argument is that
the export price is nearer $100. Harry walks away, on the reasoning that he is
heading south into heat and won't wear it.
- **A second, asked at 3,500 (~$17)**, then quoted higher, then negotiated.
- **A copy of the same thing at another stall: 2,000** — which he checks
specifically so he has a comparison.
- **The one he buys: 2,800, about $14**, after the seller calls his boss to ask
what price he can give a YouTuber. Harry's own view is that the 2,000 one was
cheaper and this one is better made.
- **A cap thrown in as an upsell**, which he declines and then buys separately.

## His method, stated

Two things he says out loud and both are transferable:

- **Take your time on a purchase that matters.** He does four laps of a market he
admits is not big, and says explicitly that you should not let yourself be
rushed on something you care about.
- **Walk away and come back.** His reading is that if the price is still there
when you return, that was the real price.

He is also frank that he is bad at this — poor at haggling, unable to judge
fabric — and he ends by asking the comments to tell him whether he was taken.

## The market itself

Every stall sells the same warm clothing, which he points out is odd in a hot
country and then answers himself: this is the one cold town. He tells one seller,
half-seriously, that they all need a competitive advantage. Prices jump when
sellers realise he is filming — one triples on sight.

## Key moments

- `[01:34]` "They have a small defect" — the first version of the label story.
- `[03:38]` 7,500 asked, about $37.
- `[04:40]` The full account: 10,000 pieces, two or three thousand rejected.
- `[06:44]` 3,500 on a second jacket, and the currency converter.
- `[08:30]` Walking away, and why he thinks it works.
- `[09:31]` A seller triples the price on realising he is a YouTuber.
- `[10:35]` The comparison: 2,000 for the copy, 3,000 for this one.
- `[12:08]` 2,800, after a phone call to the boss.
- `[13:40]` Asking the comments whether he was ripped off.
