He does, eventually, under a highway underpass — a mat on bare cement, oil, a queue of men waiting, and 45 minutes of work that alternates between genuine pain and genuine pleasure for 500 rupees. He pays $100. Around it, the day is another accumulation of things he isn't allowed to pay for. A stall gives him Coca-Cola, a shopkeeper invites him in for chai, a sweet shop feeds him through half its stock and refuses money.
