# Chaos on $1 Sri Lankan Express 🇱🇰

The train everyone in the series has been telling him about, from
[Kandy](/places/kandy.md) up into the hills towards
[Nuwara Eliya](/places/nuwara-eliya.md) with [Mac](/people/mac.md). It is
routinely called one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world, and Harry
— who says trains are his favourite way to travel — deliberately buys the
cheapest ticket on it.

*Obs: this page is based on auto-generated subtitles.*

## Third class, and why he picks it

- **Three classes.** He buys two third-class tickets at **about 200 rupees each —
roughly $1** — while Mac queues for second, so they can compare.
- **There are no reserved seats in third**, and getting one is a race. He notices
that the locals stand up before the train arrives and the tourists don't, and
  copies the locals.
- **They stand for over two hours** of a journey he puts at around four, bags on
the floor, before seats free up.
- **The doors and windows are open**, and there is very little clearance between
  the train and the trackside.

**His verdict is emphatic: third class is the best one**, and the reason isn't
the price. Vendors work up and down the carriage with drinks and snacks;
musicians play for the compartment; people talk to him for the whole journey. He
says outright that you do not get this in first class. See
[take the cheapest class](/tips/take-the-cheapest-class.md).

## The journey

- **Scheduled 8:30, arrived 8:47.**
- **Station food**: coffee, fish, and a freshly made vegetable roti that he finds
among the spiciest things he has eaten for breakfast, chilli flakes visible in
  it.
- **Coca-Cola sold through the carriage**, and a round of snacks he buys for the
people around him — five items for 1,200 rupees, and he asks the carriage
  whether he has been overcharged.
- **A monkey takes a cake straight out of the window.**
- **Live music in the carriage**, which is the passage he calls free entertainment.
- **The landscape**: jungle first, then open valleys, villages, tea plantations —
and potatoes, which he doesn't expect.
- **The train stops on the line** for something on the track, and nobody explains
  what.

## Harry the historian

He does a short history segment, flagged as such and hedged as he gives it: Sri
Lanka used to be **Ceylon**, and the railway was built in **1842 by European
coffee planters** who wanted to move goods between Kandy and Colombo more
efficiently *(from video – unverified — his own pre-trip reading, and he says on
camera his guess is as good as anyone's)*. His observation from the platform is
that the line now runs mostly for tourists, and that the platform around him is
almost entirely Western.

## Getting off in the wrong place

They miss their stop — he says the announcements and the station names were
confusing — get off at the next one instead, and find themselves at a very small
village station surrounded by tea and potato terraces, where a man immediately
sets about finding them a tuk-tuk. Harry files it as part of the adventure.
