# Avoid This Man in Sri Lanka! 🇱🇰

Moving day: [Ella](/places/ella.md) to [Weligama](/places/weligama.md) on the
south coast, with [Mac](/people/mac.md), [Ali](/people/ali.md) and
[Luke](/people/luke-damant.md), who rejoins here. Still Ali's birthday. Then an
afternoon in the market and a short, unpleasant thing on the way home.

*Obs: this page is based on auto-generated subtitles.*

## Getting there

- **A private car for four: 13,000 rupees, about $70.**
- **The route goes around the national parks** rather than straight across, which
is why it takes as long as it does.
- **The driver is 21.**
- **The south is immediately different**: humid, sunny, no cloud — the first
proper beach weather of the trip, after a fortnight in the hills.

## Where they stay

**A hostel room, taken as a private room for the four of them, at $7 a night
each** — in a place that is a hotel and a hostel together, with the sea in front
of it. It is by some distance the cheapest accommodation of the Sri Lanka series
and follows a $150-a-night villa and a hotel at $200.

**Weligama is a surf town.** Surf camps and boards on every side, and he says
plainly that they are in a tourist hotspot.

## The sunglasses, and the sellers

Five minutes' walk into town, through a market selling fruit, clothes, jewellery
and household goods, hunting for sunglasses — knowingly counterfeit ones, which
he says outright he wants to be good fakes.

- **Asked 700 rupees, paid 500 — about $3**, the cheapest sunglasses he has ever
bought, and he expects them to last ten minutes.
- **He hands over an extra dollar anyway**, and explains why: the two men selling
them were not pushy at all and were, he says, **the friendliest people he has met
  in Sri Lanka**.

The visit runs long because they keep talking — cricket, England, where he is
from — and he leaves saying he will come back.

## The man on the way back

On the walk home a man approaches him asking for money and then turns aggressive,
swinging something at him. Nothing lands and Harry keeps walking.

Two things he says about it are the useful part:

- **He had seen the same man earlier in the week**, in the middle of an argument
with a local who was trying to get him to leave, and had read him as trouble
  then.
- **He does not generalise from it.** It sits in the same video, minutes apart,
as his verdict that the sellers in the market were the friendliest people of the
trip, and he lets the two stand side by side without reconciling them.

*Obs: the man is not named, described or identified here. The video title is
reproduced verbatim in the frontmatter because that is how the video is cited;
the bundle's own account of a private individual carries no more than what
happened.*
