# $0.30 Local Breakfast In Welligama 🇱🇰

A wandering day in [Weligama](/places/weligama.md) with [Ali](/people/ali.md),
[Mac](/people/mac.md) and [Luke](/people/luke-damant.md): a drink, a swim, a
tuk-tuk into the back streets, and a market negotiation he loses.

## The 30-cent drink

A roadside press on a back street, run by a 17-year-old, and the recipe is the
point because it is not what a British reader expects from "lemonade":

- **Limes, crushed whole in a hand press** — several of them, skin off.
- **Fresh water**, two or three tablespoons of **sugar**, then **salt**, then
  **pepper**.
- **60 rupees, about 30 cents.**

It comes out cloudy and grey, which he says looks like seawater, and he expects
the salt to be a mistake. His verdict: the pepper is undetectable, the salt is
just there, the lime is overwhelming, and it is very good.

## Salt on fruit

The same idea again, an hour later, and this time he flags it as a national
habit: **salt and pepper are put on fruit here.**

At a hole-in-the-wall shop a man cuts a whole pineapple down with a knife —
**100 rupees, and Harry pays 200** — and it is, flatly, the best pineapple he has
ever eaten: soft, very sweet, and much better than the pineapple he has been
getting at hotel breakfasts, which he puts down to freshness. Offered salt with
it, he takes it, having disliked the same thing on mango, and is converted.

## The beach

- **The Indian Ocean is warm** — the first sea he has swum in in a long time that
  wasn't cold.
- **Body surfing**, volleyball on the sand, and fishing boats drawn up along the
  front, which he decides on camera he wants to go out on.
- **Surf etiquette**: stay out of the surfers' way, because the water is theirs.
- **He loses his sunglasses to a wave** — the pair he bought two days earlier, and
  by his count the fourth pair in a year.
- **Around 30°C and humid**, overcast but with the sun still strong enough to
  matter.

## Asking the driver to choose

Rather than picking a destination, he gets into a tuk-tuk and asks to be taken
somewhere local, good and interesting — and says on camera this is what he used
to do in Pakistan. **400 rupees, and he pays 500.** It produces the best part of
the video: a back street with a church at the end of it. See

What he finds there:

- **A strong Muslim community and several mosques**, on the edge of town.
- **His observation about the country**, made here: Sri Lanka is a mixing pot —
  Buddhism, Islam, Catholicism and other Christian denominations — and, as far as
  he can see, they live alongside each other peacefully.
- **Another British postbox.**
- **A man who shows him his identity document**, a piece of paper, and the year on
  it.
- **Turkeys loose in an alley**, which he has never seen outside a cartoon and
  reacts to accordingly.

## The shirt he loses on

A patterned shirt at a stall in the tourist part of town — light fabric, which is
his actual reason for wanting one.

**Asked 3,000, moved to 2,000, and he pays 1,900 — about $9.** He offered 800,
then 1,000, then 1,700, and got almost nothing. He says so plainly: his
negotiating needs work, and he knows the seller could have sourced it very
cheaply.

Then he states the double bind he lives with in the comments, which is the most
honest thing in the video: **half of them will say he was scammed, and half will
say he shouldn't be trying to take money off people.** He doesn't resolve it,
beyond noting he doesn't enjoy arguing over a pound and that it was a very
