# Sri lankan Stranger Won’t Let Me Pay 🇱🇰

Harry and [Ali](/people/ali.md) eat their way down **Aluthkade**, the food
street in [Colombo](/places/colombo.md) that the video description calls the
city's culinary destination, particularly after midnight — it runs until two or
three in the morning, and they arrive at the start of the evening.

*Obs: this page is based on auto-generated subtitles.*

## String hoppers, finally

He has been trying to eat these since a hotel buffet in
[Kandy](/places/kandy.md) ran out of them three weeks earlier. He gets the
**sweet version, at 20 rupees each** — rice-flour noodle cakes with **coconut and
jaggery** worked into the middle, which is the crunch he can't place at first.

## The food street

- **Everything is made in bulk, in the open**, which he says makes sense at these
  prices.
- **He invites himself into a kitchen** and is welcomed — a samosa production
line, vegetable, egg, chicken and beef, wrapped and stacked by the hundred.
- **Samosas**: layered, very crisp, heavy with oil, black pepper, onion and
tomato, and **not spicy at all** — which he says is the pleasure of them after
three weeks of chilli burying everything else.
- **A bakery** doing butter cake — lemony, and the thing he most wants more of —
and bread at **130 rupees a loaf**, offered to him at 100.
- **His method, stated at the top**: the best thing to do is **ask a local where
to eat**, and he does, twice. See
  [eat at the local place](/tips/eat-at-the-local-place.md).

## Two people who won't take his money

The reason the video has the title it has, and they point in the same direction.

- **The baker refuses payment entirely** for the butter cake and the bread, and
won't take change either. **Harry accepts it** rather than arguing, which is not
what he normally does — see
[insist on paying](/tips/insist-on-paying.md), which this complicates.
- **The samosa seller tells him he has overpaid**, unprompted, and Harry says on
camera he had braced for the opposite.

Both happen a day after the shoe cleaner, a few streets away, and he draws the
comparison himself without labouring it: **Colombo has the friendliest people he
has met in the country**, with [Kandy](/places/kandy.md) close behind.
