Harry’s Egypt is one day in Cairo and an afternoon at Giza, with the reputation as the explicit subject: Cairo is one of the most famous cities in the world for travel scams, and he goes in saying he isn’t there to judge and wants to give people the benefit of the doubt.

His verdict is not the one the title promises. It is that Egypt is like any other place with a lot of tourists in it, that he was expecting to be swarmed and wasn’t, and that the day ends with strangers running after him to give him back a phone he dropped in the sand.

  • Egyptians do not take no for an answer, and Harry says he has never met a nationality like it. You can tell a seller there is absolutely no chance and it changes nothing. He frames this as resilience rather than as a complaint.
  • The selling technique to know is the free gift. Something is pressed into your hands as a present, and payment is expected at the end — or your change simply doesn’t come back. It is worked on him at length in a perfume shop.
  • Some prices are fixed by the government, and knowing which ones changes everything. A camel or horse at the pyramids is 500 Egyptian pounds an hour, officially, so 500 is the ceiling regardless of who asks.
  • Tourist areas carry tourist prices, which Harry treats as normal rather than a scam and pays without much argument on small items.
  • Mohamed Salah is the national figure, and everybody supports Liverpool because of him. Being English opens conversations everywhere for the same reason.
  • The honesty runs the other way too. A shoe cleaner asks him to pay whatever he likes; a group of street performers refuse payment; and when he drops his phone at Giza, the men around him drive back to look for it and return it.
  • His overall read on the scam reputation: not as bad as he was told, and no worse than any heavily touristed site anywhere in the world. He allows that he is experienced at this and that a first-time traveller might find it harder.
