Harry's coverage so far is a day in Bangkok — Muay Thai as the thing to actually do, the visibility of transgender women in Thai life, and a local's advice on what tourists get wrong.

Thailand

One day in Bangkok so far, spent with a Thai creator who answers most of the questions on this page.

Gender and visibility

  • The term. Ladyboy is the word commonly used in Thailand for transgender women, and it is what Chinni uses about herself alongside transgender.
  • Harry’s framing in the description, and it is his rather than hers: Thailand is comparatively accepting of gender diversity, and transgender women are a visible presence in public life.
  • What it is like to be asked about is the part that comes from her rather than from him: strangers open with questions about her body, and her objection isn’t to the subject but to who is asking and when.
  • Not a single view. She gets criticism from within the LGBTQ community for sounding as if she speaks for everyone; her answer is that she speaks only for herself.

What to do, according to a local

  • Muay Thai. She names it as the thing Thailand is most famous for and the thing a visitor should do — and she is better at it than Harry.
  • The nightlife districts, if you want a night out.
  • Skip the ping pong shows. Her words: they’re for nasty guys.
  • Pad thai is Harry’s own default order anywhere in the world, which he admits on camera in the country that invented it.

The far north

From the Golden Triangle video, where Thailand is the base rather than the subject.

  • Harry’s own comparison, made on the road: after Myanmar and Laos, what he notices about Thailand is how easy it is — good roads, convenient shops, simple logistics.
  • The Golden Triangle is a 400 km, two-day drive north, to the point where Thailand, Myanmar and Laos meet on the Mekong.
  • The crossing into Laos is by longboat across the river, into the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone.
  • Gambling is illegal in Thailand, which is why Thai gamblers cross to the casino on the Laotian side.
