Harry's guide in Yemen — the man who translates, explains the war, and gets him into a wedding and a family's home on his first day in the country.

Harry’s guide across southern Yemen, working with a driver named Abdul. They meet him off the flight from Cairo at Seiyun and take him the length of the Hadhramaut to the coast.

Yemen cannot be travelled independently — the government requires tourists to have armed security and areas like Wadi Doan need a police escort — so the guide is not an optional extra here, and Jamal is doing most of the work that makes the trip possible.

What he does

  • Translates throughout, including the conversation with a group of women in Shibam that Harry could not have had otherwise.
  • Explains the security arrangement when the armed guard appears on day two and Harry has no idea why.
  • Gets him into a Yemeni wedding on his first day, which Harry singles out as the kind of access most guides would not go out of their way to arrange.
  • Gets him inside a family’s home in Wadi Doan to ask what ordinary life costs.
  • Supplies the country’s own numbers, including the estimate that 30–40% of Yemenis carry a gun.

Harry closes the first Yemen video with a direct credit to Jamal and Abdul, and publishes the tour company he booked through in the description.

On the second leg he explains the thing Harry could not have worked out alone: why Saddam Hussein’s portrait is in car windows all over Al-Mukalla.
