Kay

Harry's guide in Lesotho, and the source of almost everything the Lesotho pages know — the Moshoeshoe history, the flag, the bride price, and which rules apply on a donkey pub crawl.

Kay

A tour guide in Lesotho, whose Instagram Harry publishes in the description with the recommendation that he is the best guide in the country. He and a driver take Harry, Kieran and Luke Damant from the airport to Semonkong and through the 48 hours that follow.

Harry’s reason for booking a guide at all is stated plainly: the country is mountainous and remote, you need a 4x4, and there is so little tourism infrastructure that he struggled to research the place before arriving.

What he supplies

Nearly all of the substance on the Lesotho pages comes from him:

  • The history — Moshoeshoe unifying the clans in the 1800s against famine, war and Zulu attack, and the mountains turning the result into a fortress that was never taken.
  • The flag: blue for rain, white for peace, green for prosperity.
  • The bride price, which used to run to about 15 cows and has largely gone, and what it actually depended on — family and education rather than looks.
  • Why donkeys rather than horses: slower, but stronger, sure-footed, and the right animal for carrying loads up a mountain.
  • What is hardest about life here, asked directly: surviving day to day — food, and the money to keep children in school. Farming is for the household, stored to get through winter.
  • The rules of a donkey pub crawl: cans while riding, not bottles.

He is thirty, has a daughter, and points out that this puts him some way ahead of the three men he is driving around.
