Use card perks at expensive hotels

Harry’s method for the nights he spends at the top of the market. He books through a premium travel credit card — his is an Amex Platinum — and the room rate stops being the whole transaction: a property credit comes back to him, and breakfast, early check-in, late checkout and a room upgrade come with it.

The point is not that the hotel becomes cheap. It’s that the difference between booking the same room directly and booking it through the card is several hundred dollars of value on a stay he was making anyway.

How Harry applies it

On Boracay, at the island’s most expensive hotel — the $550–600-a-night tier — the card brought a $100 property credit and early check-in. He stayed one night at that price and moved somewhere cheaper rather than pay it twice, which is the other half of how he uses this: the perks make a single night at the top affordable, not a week.

At the Equinox in New York, rated the best hotel in the city, the same card was meant to bring a $100 credit, free breakfast, early check-in, late checkout and a free upgrade.

And the failure mode, which he films. The upgrade didn’t happen, because he booked the same day and the hotel was full. His own conclusion, said to camera: book ahead next time. The perks that cost the hotel nothing arrive reliably; the one that depends on inventory does not.
