Chaotic $10 Challenge in Dhaka, Bangladesh π§π©
Ten dollars, one day, Old Dhaka. The format Harry runs in several countries, and the Bangladesh version is the one where the budget stretches furthest: dessert, a drink, a full meal, a massage and a designer-copy jumper, with the sum landing exactly on zero.
Obs: Harry says the budget is ten thousand taka once at the start, but every running total in the video is against one thousand, and the individual prices confirm it. The pages use 1,000.
The two moments worth the video are both accidental. A pulao seller refuses to charge him β the first time in the country heβs been fed free β and Harry decides to count it against the budget anyway rather than take the advantage. And he wanders into a fish market he was about to walk past, comes out with the best reception of the day, and turns it into a general rule.
Key moments
- [01:07] Jalebi off a production line β coiled, deep-fried, drained β for 20 taka.
- [02:46] He rates it above the Indian version: smaller, and the big ones there made him feel sick.
- [03:52] A paratha line: rolled at one station, flipped at the next, slapped down at the third, thirty seconds on the plate.
- [04:58] A mint and lemon drink, 60 taka, salted, which he rates one of his favourite drinks of the trip.
- [06:41] Beef pulao. The biryani vats are cooked elsewhere in the city and delivered β the shop is a serving point, not a kitchen.
- [08:29] Eaten by hand, with a boiled egg and a chicken gravy poured over.
- [10:39] They wonβt take his money: youβre our guest. He notes itβs the first free meal he has been given in Bangladesh.
- [11:14] He counts it against the budget regardless.
- [12:31] New Market on a Sunday, which is to say completely full.
- [13:06] The garment-export point again β Nike, Adidas, Zara, H&M all made here.
- [13:47] Density: 30,000 people per square mile or kilometre, and he says on camera he canβt remember which.
- [16:00] Being pushed left and right in the crowd, and openly finding it overwhelming.
- [16:31] The fish market, entered on impulse.
- [19:21] The ice, which he points out is the same ice that goes into street drinks.
- [22:22] The rule he draws from it: fish market people are the friendliest anywhere, in every fish market he has been to, and almost everyone walks straight past.
- [22:45] A gentsβ parlour tucked away off the street. 300 taka.
- [23:05] They assume YouTube isnβt a job and that he must be a student.
- [24:10] The massage uses no oil at all β pure friction, on the head, arms, fingers and back.
- [27:24] He is offered an arm-hair trim, on the grounds that he needs it, and accepts.
- [27:57] He loses his bracelet, having spent the trip telling people he never has problems.
- [28:35] Shoes at 2,000 taka, which blows the budget instantly.
- [33:11] A Burberry jumper described as first copy and made in Bangladesh.
- [34:20] 500 taka, fixed price, which spends the budget to the last note.
