A travel day: Kandy to Sigiriya by taxi with Mac, Luke and Ali, four people and their luggage in one van. The rock itself is the next video; this one is the journey and the house at the end of it.

The drive
- Two to two and a half hours, quoted at around 5,000 rupees — just under $25, split four ways — with a little extra because the accommodation turned out to be further out than they thought. Harry’s verdict is that it is very cheap for the distance.
- The van has screens in the back, which they use to play each other’s videos, and Harry ends up in the rearmost seat.
- A wild elephant standing in the road, which stops the video dead. He hadn’t known there were elephants in the country at all.
- The last stretch is a dirt road with dogs alongside it, long enough that he starts commenting on how long it is.
The driver chews betel nut through the journey and hands some round; Harry tries a sour fruit offered from the front and can’t name it or find anything in it but sourness. His account of the betel nut is that it gives a mild buzz, and his observation — his own, not the driver’s — is that the driving got more erratic and the horn got busier afterwards.
The Pizza Hut stop
Not local food, and he says so: the others spotted it from the window. It earns its place on the page for the numbers and the comparison.

The villa
At the end of the dirt road: about $300 for two nights — $150 a night, split between four — a spread-out place in the trees with a pool that they get into before checking in, four bedrooms allotted by lucky dip, and a caretaker who is cleaning the pool when they arrive. Harry’s note is the temperature: the tree cover keeps it mild, and if he stops talking there is no sound at all.
